HY-5 was at the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition
HY-5 at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo 2025 in Hamburg
From 21 to 23 October 2025, the North German hydrogen initiative HY-5 presented itself at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo (HTWE) in Hamburg – Europe’s most important trade fair for hydrogen and fuel cell innovation. More than 20,000 trade visitors and over 800 companies from all over the world came together to learn about new technologies, strengthen cooperation and discuss strategies for a sustainable hydrogen economy.
The event kicked off with a panel discussion moderated by HY-5 member Heike Tipmonta entitled ‘Building the Ideal Hydrogen Ecosystem: Why Collaboration Across Regions, Sectors, and Borders Is Key’. With experts such as Dr Christine Falken-Großer (BMWE), Dr Alexandra Stein (Net Zero Technology Centre) and Bert Kiewiet (Gasunie), the discussion offered valuable insights into the importance of international cooperation for building an efficient hydrogen economy.
In addition to professional exchanges at the stands of the states of Bremen and Hamburg, numerous international meetings took place – including with delegations from Japan, the Netherlands, Scotland and Finland. The focus was particularly on close cooperation with Japanese partners such as JETRO and Trusted.
One highlight of the fair was the B2B matchmaking event organised by HY-5 in collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO). Leading Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Sumitomo Electric Industries and Toray Industries Europe met with representatives of German companies to explore new business opportunities and partnerships.
International exchange was also cultivated beyond the exhibition grounds: relations between Japan and northern Germany were further deepened during a reception at the residence of the Japanese Consul General in Hamburg.
In addition, a meeting took place between Bremen and Kobe, which reaffirmed the long-standing cooperation between the two partner regions in the field of hydrogen.
HY-5 draws a positive conclusion: three days full of discussions, ideas and new collaborations show that northern Germany is continuing to gain importance as a European hydrogen hub. The initiative wants to continue the dialogue and further advance the green hydrogen economy together with its international partners.
When it comes to hydrogen, Hamburg is the place to be!
